  Río Negro
Argentinean Patagonia holds the oldest and most important wine exponent in Río Negro High Valley, at 40º southern latitude. It is a 120km-long and 8km-wide oasis, settled in the vast, arid and wild Patagonian plateau.
Towards the Atlantic Ocean, other two valleys have developed at minor scale One is Middle Valley, and next o it, Lower Valley. Though both areas are managed following traditional methods, only the wines from High Valley have reached a deserved domestic and world-wide recognition.

At 370 meters above sea level, weather in Rio Negro High Valley is markedly continental, dry, with average annual rainfalls below 190 mm and very low relative humidity. Winter is cold, while summer is warm and dry, providing this region a remarkable luminosity and great temperature ranges. Southern winds coming from mountain range are constant, increasing the dryness of the ambience and allowing excellent vineyard sanity.

The unique characteristics of the Patagonian scenery provide its wines a strong personality. All of them stand out due to their excellent levels alcohol-acidity relationship as a result of the slow ripeness of the grapes. Wines obtained from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are particularly interesting, with personal aromas and mineral touches which are not easily found in other regions. Merlot, Pinot Noir and Malbec stand out among red wines. They have a good coloring intensity and market typicity. Recent elaborations of Cabernet Sauvignon resulted very promising.

We should not leave unmentioned that there are vineyards planted down south from this region, at a town call El Hoyo de Epuyen, reaching the boundaries with the province of Chubut, at latitude 42 degrees south. Except for areas with many weather limitations, it is possible that Patagonia will generate an avalanche of viticultural investments, having into consideration the possible combination of fine wine industry and the traditional, attractive and well-developed industry of tourism.
