Mr. Jiri Sliva, the renowned caricaturist, took part in the event organized by the Argentinian Embassy in the Czech Republic during the celebrations of Malbec World Day last April. He made thematic posters on Argentina and wine, which were handed out among the special guests. Representatives from the Argentinian Embassy interviewed Mr. Sliva in order to find out more about his connection with Argentinian wine:

1. Why were you interested in participating in the Malbec World Day celebrations?

2. Do you drink Argentinian wine? Do you drink Malbec?
3. Have you ever visited Argentina?
4. What do you find attractive about our country?
5. And about our wines?

MR SLIVA’S ANSWERS:

1/ It was the first time I had ever heard about Malbec. I was asked by my friend Vicente Espeche Gil, the Argentinian ambassador, to create three pictures for Malbec World Day 2011.

2/ It was also the first time that I had the chance to know the wide and wonderful variety of Argentinian wines. Their names sound a little exotic to my ears, but I like them. I also found it interesting that they are mostly not named according to the variety – Merlot, Pinot, Cabernet – but according to their place of origin.

3/ I have never been to Argentina, but I would like to exhibit there one day, together with my colleague and friend, the great Argentinian artist Hermenegildo Sabat.

4/ I like the mixture of Latin American and European – mostly Italian – elements in Argentinian culture, and I love Astor Piazzolla’s music.

5/ I love all good wines, and I was attracted by the strength and the aroma of Argentinian Malbecs.
