Cornucopia Wine Festival Reflects Argentina’s Diversity

“Beyond Malbec” was the name chosen by Iain and Barbara Philip (MW) for the seminar they conducted to promote the great diversity of Argentine wines among consumers.

At full capacity, the Whistler Convention Center hosted more than 80 consumers during the nearly-two-hour seminar – the biggest of the Cornucopia Wine Festival 2010 edition.

Attendees profited from Iain and Barbara’s talent and experience as educators, and from every one of their comments on the 14 wines that were tasted during the presentation.

A 100% Malbec (Gold Medal at the Argentina Wine Awards 2010) opened the wine tasting “to gauge people’s palate”, and then came Malbec Blends, Torrontés, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Bonarda, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

Wines from 4 winegrowing provinces – from Salta to Río Negro – were included in the tasting.

To many attendees, this was their first encounter with Argentine “Non-Malbecs”.

The promotional and educational objectives of the event were fully achieved, and this served to position Argentina as the benchmark for Malbec and to show the many possibilities the country has to offer.

The western tour will continue next Monday, November 15 and Tuesday, November 16 with lunches for the press, sommeliers and on trade, to be held in Vancouver and Calgary respectively.
