November: the time for Argentine wines in Canada

Fairs, gourmet meetings with prominent figures of the wine industry, seminars and tutored tastings will make Canadians feel that wine ‘is in the air’ this month.

A set of marketing activities have been scheduled to start on November 5 in Canada. These actions are part of the series of promotional campaigns that have been conducted by Wines of Argentina in each destination market for national wines over a number of years now. Fairs, gourmet meetings with prominent figures of the wine industry, seminars and tutored tastings will make Canadians feel that wine ‘is in the air’ this month.

Program of Activities:

1- Ottawa Wine and Food Show

The Ottawa Wine & Food Show will be held in that city from November 5 to November 7. This 25th anniversary edition promises to be bigger and better than ever. Over the course of three days, the best wines, food and spirits of the world will be showcased to give the audience the chance to learn from locally and internationally renowned wine makers, chefs, brew masters and cheese makers. Among other attractions, the public attending the fair will be able to enjoy wine tastings and live cooking demonstrations and receive useful tips on dinner catering and wine-food pairing.

Argentine wines will be the focus of three specific activities:

-          The Argentine wineries exhibit booths.

-          The “Vintage Bar”, a generic Argentine wines exhibit booth offering high-quality wines at bargain prices.

-          The Tutored Tasting, a tasting of 8 Argentine wines conducted by a specialist.

The “Tutored Tastings" introduce amateurs and experts to still and sparkling wines in different seminars where a tasting specialist guides the attendees through the tasting and provides relevant information about each country, its culture and traditions, its wine regions, etc. This is a unique opportunity for Argentina, where attendees and producers of the brands on show have a chance to interact directly with one another, in a private yet informal context. Eight Argentine wines that were awarded the Gold Medal in the 2009-2010 edition of the Argentina Wine Awards can be tasted at the Show.

The wineries featuring at the Ottawa Wine & Food Show are: Achával Ferrer, Domaine Jean Bousquet, Familia Zuccardi, Gouguenheim Winery, Graffigna, Luigi Bosca, Monteviejo, Pascual Toso, Trapiche and Trivento. In addition, the Vintage Bar will feature a variety of different Argentine wine brands.

2- Lunch series with influential key figures in the wine industry

These meetings with restaurant owners, sommeliers, buyers, journalists and wine educators are aimed at promoting Argentine wines over lunch, in different regions of Canada.

Four different events will be held. Some of them will be consumer-oriented, while others will be targeted at members of the trade.

The first "Key Influentials Lunch Series" will be held on November 12 in British Columbia, more specifically, at the Whistler Ski Center. This meeting will be attended by the trade. A consumer-oriented event will take place on November 13 at the Cornucopia Wine Festival, including an Argentine wine tasting bar and an informative seminar entitled "Beyond Malbec", to be held at the Whistler Conference Centre, and directed by Master of Wine Barbara Philip (from Barbariain Wine Consulting). On November 15, a trade lunch will be held in Vancouver and another lunch has been scheduled for November 16, in Calgari, province of Alberta. The latter is targeted at the most influential buyers of the industry.

During this four-day tour around western cities, 64 Argentine wines from 22 different wineries will be tasted. They represent all the wine regions and varietals. These are: Altos Las Hormigas, Belasco de Baquedano, Catena Zapata, Bodega del Desierto, Bodega del Fin del Mundo, Escorihuela, Clos de los 7, Familia Shroeder, Familia Zuccardi, Finca Decero, Finca Flichman, Finca La Celia, Gouguenheim Winery, Humberto Canale, Michel Torino, O´Fournier, Pascual Toso, Renacer, Terrazas de los Andes, Trapiche, Viñas de Altura and Zorzal Wines.

3- Toronto Gourmet Food & Wine Show

Once in Toronto, Wines of Argentina will be part of the “Toronto Gourmet Food & Wine Show", which will be held from November 18 to November 21. This annual meeting takes place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre South Building. Every year, the exhibition offers its more than 36,000 visitors a unique opportunity to taste more than 1,500 wines, spirits and beers from all over the world.

WOFA’s exhibition will be mounted in the Argentine pavilion and 11 producers will be present along with a generic exhibit booth called "Vintage Bar" displaying special products and limited quantities of Argentine wines.

These are the participating wineries: Clos de los 7, Domaine Jean Bousquet, Familia Shroeder, Familia Zuccardi, Gaffigna, La Chamiza, Luigi Bosca, Pascual Toso, Trapiche, Trivento and Zorzal Wines, together with the wineries exhibiting at the “Vintage Bar”.

As in Ottawa, this event will host a new tutored wine tasting led by WOFA’s Ariel Menniti and Rafael Miranda (guest enologist, from La Chamiza Estate). This program will also offer attendees information about the best in Argentine winemaking: the country’s diverse wine regions and a selection of award-winning wines at the 2010 Argentina Wine Awards. The eight gold medal winners, of the Malbec and Torrontes varieties, have been selected for the occasion by a renowned international panel of experts.
