We probably don’t need to introduce you to the great wines of Argentina. For many of you, it would now be hard to imagine surviving the long, cold winter nights without a blood-warming Malbec from Argentina’s Mendoza region. A little known gem just a few years ago, Argentina is the Justin Bieber of the wine world; young and new, but already superstar.
With winter behind us and spring in full swing, there’s no reason to abandon the Argentinean section of your local wine shop. Step away from the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Put down the Pinot Grigio. It’s time to discover Argentina’s other great wine grape. Just north of Mendoza are three wine regions – Salta, San Juan and La Rioja. It’s here that the country’s most impressive white wines are being made from the Torrontés grape.
Just stick your nose in a glass of Torrontés. In many cases you’ll already have gotten your money’s worth. Juicy tropical and citrus aromas are matched by a garden-load of floral notes. This stuff smells good enough to spray on your neck! Take a sip and you might be left confused. What can smell like a sweet wine is usually dry and packed with fresh fruit flavors. The razor-like acidity then kicks in, cutting through a wide range of food types, leaving you refreshed and ready for another sip. Maybe Torrontés’ best attribute is not its flavor or aroma, but the price tag on the bottle. Few bottles cost more than the price of movie passes, and it does just as good a job at keeping you entertained for a couple of hours.
